Well-being at work: 5 tips for staying hydrated throughout the workday

What you drink is just as important as what you eat: 70% of our body is made up of water, and we lose between 2 and 3 liters of it every day through our skin pores, lung activity, kidney function, and other elimination processes. Pure water has a greater cleansing effect on body tissues than any other beverage. It dissolves and distributes nutrients, is essential for digestion, and flushes out impurities.

Modern life offers us a thousand other complicated and not always healthy options, each one more tempting than the last. Whether you’re sitting all day or rushing from appointment to meeting, overindulging in coffee, wine, and sugary drinks, you may be dehydrating yourself without realizing it—and you’re likely not drinking the right beverages for you. This ultimately undermines your well-being at work, whether in the office or working from home!

The Right Diet for All Yogis

Issue No. 1
Start each day with warm water and a squeeze of lemon!

When you wake up, squeeze a fresh lemon into a large glass of lukewarm or hot water, and add a piece of fresh ginger if you like. It’s the perfect way to kick-start your digestive system and stay hydrated first thing in the morning.

TIP #2
: Drink between meals!

To avoid diluting your digestive juices and dampening the “fire” of digestion, drink at least 20 minutes before or after a meal, and as little as possible while you’re eating.

No. 3
: Cut out soda and stimulants

Forget about commercial sodas, which are full of hidden sugars, chemicals, artificial sweeteners, and carbonation that disrupt digestion. Instead, drink plain water and add fresh herbs (basil, mint, thyme, rosemary…), seasonal fruits (raspberries, strawberries), or even cucumber. Replace your tea and coffee with herbal infusions, and if you miss that caffeine “kick,” try breathing exercises to boost your energy. If you’re addicted to aspartame or at least two sugar cubes in your hot drink, replace them with a small spoonful of maple syrup, which has a natural sweetness and is far less processed.

No. 4
: It’s better to drink too much than not enough.

It’s said that you should drink at least 1.5 liters of water a day to stay hydrated and keep your body functioning properly, but feel free to drink more depending on your activity level, the season, and your environment (such as air conditioning, which can dry out the air)… A few tips: keep an eye on the color of your urine—it should remain very light—and drink before you feel thirsty. However, avoid drinking before, during, and immediately after a workout.

No. 5
: No more iced drinks!

Drink hot or room-temperature water and avoid ice cubes and iced drinks as much as possible, or you risk dampening your digestive “fire.” Have you ever noticed that when you dip your hands in ice-cold water, your fingers turn completely white? That’s because the cold reduces blood flow to them. Iced drinks do the same thing to your digestive system: blood vessels constrict, and the system that separates nutrients from waste has a harder time functioning. If you opt for hot or warm herbal teas and room-temperature water, your digestion will be easier.

The recipe for golden milk

turmeric theme

Golden milk is the ultimate drink for yogis! It’s made with turmeric, an incredibly powerful spice used in Ayurveda for its anti-inflammatory, digestive, and immune-boosting properties. The following recipe is simple and delicious, serves two people, and can be enjoyed for breakfast or at any time of day.

  • In a saucepan, bring 2 cups of water to a boil with a few crushed turmeric roots (or 1 tablespoon of turmeric paste, if you have it), black pepper, and a few cardamom seeds.
  • Once the mixture comes to a boil, add 2 cups of plant-based milk (almond, oat, or coconut milk) and 1 tablespoon of unrefined cane sugar.
  • Let it simmer over low heat, stirring occasionally, for about 15 minutes: the mixture will slowly take on a promising orange hue.
  • Strain the mixture, pour it into a glass, and enjoy!
